If you can hang onto the ball under pressure, you'll have time to make better decisions (including finding an open teammate to pass the ball to). Now how you can practice this: Start with two equal-sized players with a single ball in a grid about 3-yards square and have them work on holding the ball by using simple rolls, pullbacks and other touches to shield the ball. If you teach your players ANYTHING, teach them the skills to keep possession. Once they realize that they have the skills to keep an opponent from stealing the ball, they will gain the confidence to lift their heads up and find another player to pass off to. Before they gain this confidence, you can expect terrible passing simply because they will get flustered at the first hint of pressure (and might even "feel" panicked at pressure which is 10-20 yards away). Until your players can hold a ball 1v1 in a grid about 10 feet by 10 feet for a count of around 7-8, they are not going to have enough confidence to do very well on the field. What these coaches don't realize is that a player only needs to know about 3 basic moves to be able to dribble very successfully--and that virtually all top-notch players use these same 3 moves about 90% of the time when they are dribbling the ball. Any one wants to learn these three Skills. Let me explain here. The moves are the check (a/k/a "magic hop" in some Vogelsinger videos); the simple cut/explosion using the outside of the dribble foot; and the chop (cut with the inside of the foot). If they can master these three moves, and learn the standard, straight-ahead dribbling technique (i.e. knee over the ball; front of dribble foot pulls the ball along so it stays on/near the foot at all times), they can learn to beat a reasonable number of defenders especially if those defenders are coming in at speed.

The Vikes did pick up Sage Rosenfels, but the nine-year veteran is really nothing more than a journeyman. They also have Gus Frerotte, who, at 37, has to be close to retirement, and Tarvaris Jackson, a young gun who has shown flashes of competent QB play but lacks the consistency at this point to be the man.

Upon further examination, however, I'm not sure how much Favre would help Percy for two main reasons. First, regardless of who is under center, Minnesota is going to be a run-first team. When you have arguably the best running back in the NFL in Adrian Peterson, you're going to give him the rock early and often. In 30 career games, he has carried the ball 601 times. You can bet that number will continue to rise as Peterson begins to reach his prime.

The other thing to consider is Favre himself. If you followed the Jets down the stretch last year, you know that Favre looked like a shell of his former self. In the final five games of the 2008 season, Favre only completed 56 percent of his passes, had nine interceptions to just two touchdowns and never threw for more than 247 yards in a game. New York went 1-4 in that stretch and missed the playoffs, and a good deal of the blame for the collapse falls squarely on Favre's shoulders.

It has been reported that he suffered a torn biceps muscle at some point in the season, and that led to the decline. Doctors recommended he get surgery or try and rest it. He went the rest route, but it's not known how he will come back, if he ultimately decides to come back.

Regardless of who is at quarterback for the Vikings, the team would be well served to get the ball in Harvin's hands as much as possible. I really think that Minnesota can use him in many of the same ways he was used at UF. With his size (5'11", 192 pounds) and injury history, it probably wouldn't be wise to run him up the middle like he was accustomed to doing at Florida. But you could give him the ball on wide receiver sweeps, throw him screens and get him involved in the return game, something the Gators didn't have to do because of Brandon James.

Looking at Minnesota's roster, the most accomplished receiver is Bernard Berrian, who is, for the most part, strictly a deep threat. That means Harvin should get the opportunity to step right in and make an impact. While Favre's presence in Minnesota might make for some drama, I don't think he will have a huge influence on Percy one way or the other.

It's mid-May and Spring is in the air; the grass has had its first mowing, the magnolia tree in my yard has bloomed, baseball is fully under way....and NFL fans have begun a ritual that has become an annual rite of Spring - speculating about whether or not Brett Favre will play again this fall.

The rumor mill has begun and this year it's hovering squarely over Minnesota. It began a few weeks ago with football analysts suggesting that "if" Brett wanted to play again he might consider the Vikings. Early last week we learned that Favre asked the Jets to relinquish their rights to him, which they did, but allegedly it was so he could simply take advantage of a retirement package the Packers were offering. Minnesota Head Coach Brad Childress came out and insisted that nobody in the Vike's organization had any contact with Favre, but left the door open by adding that they "talk about everything". Today we're hit with the dual announcements that Mark Wilf is interested and Favre has been throwing to some high school receivers.

In case you're unable to connect the dots let me do it for you. Brett Favre will be taking the field in September wearing the purple and gold of the Minnesota Vikings.

If you're a Minnesota fan this should not be good news for you. Brett Favre was one of the greatest quarterbacks to ever play the game; there's no argument about that, but the key word is "was". Last year's comeback with the Jets was an embarrassment for Favre and cost Eric Mangini his job. If the Vikings make the same series of mistakes this year, it will make Tavaris Jackson a fan favorite and Brad Childress public enemy number one. In fairness to Favre, let me explain.

Like many NFL teams, the Jets began preparing for the 2008 season with the mentality that they were just missing that "one key piece". It just so happens that piece they thought they were missing was a quarterback. They thought Chad Pennington was washed up and Kellen Clemens wasn't ready to go. They may have been right about Clemens but Pennington proved them wrong by having a great season with Miami; but back to my point.

The Jets had a solid running back in Thomas Jones who was coming off 3 consecutive seasons with 1,000+ yards. With Faneca, Mangold and Ferguson on the line, Jones was gaining yards and scoring touchdowns; even the receivers were sharing the ball. All was well in New York as long as games were close and the Jets were leading. But when the pressure was on, the coaching staff scrapped the idea of team offense, forgot they had a running game, and started playing "Brett Ball". They asked the aging veteran to carry the team when he didn't have to.

The "Brett Ball" strategy not only cost the Jets some very important games, including the Seattle loss that effectively knocked them out of the playoffs, but it also demoralized the team. Criticism of Favre began to move through the locker room and come out publicly in interviews. By the end of the season Favre was not the same golden boy that brought such excitement to the Meadowlands on opening day.

And now we have the Vikings looking for one last final piece to get them to the Superbowl. But do they need it?

They have arguably the best running game with Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor, capable receivers with Berrian and Rice, and a good QB to develop for the future in John Booty. They have upgraded a defense that played great last year, especially against the run. They have all the ingredients to go deep in the playoffs if they can learn to play disciplined football. Yet the one component that scares me is Brad Childress. He came from the "pass first" Philadelphia Eagles where he was the offensive coordinator for six seasons. I get the strange feeling he would still be pass happy in Minnesota if he thought he had a capable QB. With Favre in the lineup the temptation might be too hard to resist.
